The longest running medical drama, Grey’s Anatomy, is set to return with its
eighteenth season on September 30. A number of characters have left the show throughout
the years. But the reasons behind the character exits have varied significantly.
The show has managed to amass a loyal fanbase that eagerly
awaits new content. Several rumours have suggested that this might be the
medical drama’s last season but there has been no official confirmation yet.

We relive some of the character returns on the show:
Derek Shepherd
Patrick Dempsey’s death left the fans heartbroken and asking
questions off the makers of the show. Meredith’s husband and the father of her
children was the ideal family man. He died in a tragic accident in season
eleven.
He reappeared on the show for brief cameos in season 12,
season 15 and most recently in season 17. The two met in one of Meredith’s
dreams while she struggled from coronavirus and the couple was seen talking
about their family in a bitter-sweet scene.

Mark Sloan
Sloan’s death was a tragic one as he succumbed to the plane
crash in season eight despite the valiant efforts of Cristina, Meredith and
other doctors. His life support was turned off by his will and season 9’s premiere
episode was the last we saw of him.
However, the fan favourite returned to visit Meredith at the
beach during her coma in season 17.
April Kepner
Sarah Drew made her debut on the show in the sixth season.
She secretly married Jackson Avery and the two had a difficult time together.
The couple got a divorce and after almost dying in a car accident in season 14
she decided to marry Matt Taylor and resigned from the Hospital.

She made a short appearance on screen in the seventeenth
season when she agreed to move to Boston with Jackson and their daughter.
After watching several familiar faces return to the show in
season 17 the fans have even greater expectations going into the next season.
Kate Walsh, Kate Burton and Abigail Spencer are set to reprise
their roles as Addison Forbes, Ellis Grey and Megan Hunt respectively.
