Netflix has released
the teaser trailer for the stop-motion animation film, Guillermo del Toro’s ‘Pinnochio’.
The Mexican filmmaker’s self-admitted passion project, ‘Pinnochio’ is set for a
release during the December holiday season.

The film has garnered interest
from fans especially because of the Academy-Award-winning filmmaker’s involvement
with the project. The writer-director of movies like ‘Pan’s Labyrinth’, ‘The
Shape of Water’, ‘Nightmare Alley‘, and ‘Crimson Peak’ has co-director this stop-motion animation
film with Mark Gustafson, who was the animation director of Wes Anderson’s 2009
venture, ‘Fantastic Mr. Fox’, which was also a stop-motion animation film. Del Toro’s co-writer on the project was Patrick McHale. Check out the trailer here:

Regarding the project, the
57-year-old director has said to Vanity Fair, “I’ve always been very intrigued by
the links between Pinocchio and Frankenstein”. He further added, “They are both
about a child that is thrown into the world. They are both created by a father
who then expects them to figure out what’s good, what’s bad, the ethics, the
morals, love, life, and essentials, on their own. I think that was, for me,
childhood. You had to figure it out with your very limited experience.”

Del Toro has said that the film speaks on what it means to be human in this world. At a time when artificial intelligence is blurring the line between humans and machines, it remains to be seen whether the film goes beyond its original material’s scope and becomes a tale pertinent to the times we live in.

The film’s plot is set in Italy during the reign of fascist leader Benito Mussolini. The character of Pinnochio is
being voiced in the film by Gregory Mann, while David Bradley is voicing the
character of Geppetto, the lead character’s father. Cate Blanchett, John Turturro, Tilda Swinton, and Christoph Waltz are set to give their voices to other characters.
