The Witcher season three, volume two, marked Henry Cavill‘s final appearance as the main character. After playing Geralt of Rivia for the show’s first three seasons, the actor stated last October that he is leaving the part.

Neither Cavill nor the show’s creators have provided a reason for his exit. However, the “Man of Steel” star did say that he is handing the reins over to Liam Hemsworth. Thus, here’s how Henry Cavill’s final scene in The Witcher Season 3 set up Liam Hemsworth’s Geralt:

Geralt of Rivia spends most of the third season of The Witcher’s finale in bed. He’s stuck in a forest recovering after getting badly injured in the decisive battle at Aretuza in a previous episode, doing his best to get well so he may continue his journey.

Ciri was driven away to another realm during the conflict, and Geralt later learned that Ciri had been taken prisoner by the Nilfgaardian empire and the evil sorcerer Vilgefortz.

Returning to the final episode, Geralt asks his sorceress lover, Yennefer, to use magic to heal him after a gang of dryads try but fail to do so. Once recovered, Geralt travels to Nilfgaard with his longtime companion Jaskier in order to stop Vilgefortz and Emperor Emhyr and save Ciri.

When Geralt witnesses some guards terrorizing a young girl near the Nilfgaardian border in the season’s penultimate moment, the two step in to stop it. All except one are killed, and that individual is instructed to inform Emhyr of his impending arrival.

The final scene with Cavill’s Geralt shows him heading toward an unknown threat while being supported by Jaskier and a new ally named Milva.

But soon after, we find out that Ciri hasn’t truly been taken prisoner by the Nilfgaardians, and Geralt is going in the wrong direction. Now, Liam Hemsworth will be the one on the quest to rescue Ciri the next time we encounter Geralt.

“Geralt’s big turn is about giving up neutrality and doing anything that he has to do to get to Ciri,” showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich explained before adding: “To me, it’s the most heroic send-off that we could have, even though it wasn’t written to be that.”

Hemsworth’s portrayal of Geralt will reveal a previously unexplored side of the character that fans previously believed they knew well. He will likely put his own interests ahead of his moral compass as he works to bring Ciri securely to his side.
