Dahmer avoided capture several times in the years leading up to his arrest in the 1990s. He committed his first murder shortly after completing high school in 1978. He was pulled over by officers in Ohio for a breathalyzer test while driving with the body of Steven Hicks (his first victim) in the car, according to the Chicago Tribune. In the same year, he joined the Army, and it would be another decade before he began his grotesque killing spree.

How was Dahmer caught?

On July 22, 1991, time finally caught up with Jeffrey Dahmer. According to Desert News, one of Dahmer’s survivors evaded capture that day and was seen running with handcuffs on by policemen nearby. Tracy Edwards, 32, was the victim who informed police that Dahmer was attempting to murder him. The pair had met earlier in a Milwaukee bar, and Edwards agreed to meet Dahmer at his home for refreshments, according to the Orlando Sentinel. But once he entered the apartment, the friendly man Edwards first met changed his tune. Fortunately, after being held hosted over several hours, Edwards narrowly avoided death and immediately sought help.

Officers were led back to Dahmer’s residence after investigating Edwards’ claims and making several shocking discoveries. The investigation revealed photos of headless corpses all over his apartment, but the most alarming discoveries were dismembered body parts in his fridge and skeletal remains settling in chemical barrels. There was also proof that he was consuming human flesh. Dahmer was arrested by police right away and eventually confessed to committing all those horrendous crimes.

The Milwaukee police department was also widely condemned for its handling of what could have been a life-saving situation for one of Dahmer’s victims, according to The New York Times. Just months before Tracy Edwards escaped, a young boy found a way out of Dahmer’s murder house, demonstrating the officer’s brazen irresponsibility. According to the Associated Press, two young women attempted to report a naked child in need and seen running to police, but he was dropped back in Dahmer’s apartment by officers who dismissed the situation as a couple’s conflict. Korenak Sinthasomphone, 14, was one of the numerous carcasses unearthed in the apartment after the victims were murdered by Dahmer.
