How many people did Dahmer kill?

In 1978, Jeffrey Dahmer committed his first murder in Bath Township, Ohio. He committed a second murder in 1987, and over the next five years, went on to kill 15 more boys and young men, the majority of whom were poor and African American, Asian, or Latino. Despite the fact that other serial killers have had far more alleged victims, Dahmer’s crimes are seen as particularly heinous, involving cannibalism, paedophilia, and necrophilia. He was given 15 consecutive life terms in February 1992, with a 16th successive life term added in May for the first murder he committed in 1978. In 1994, Dahmer was killed in a Wisconsin prison by a fellow inmate.

The details surrounding Dahmer’s crimes have sparked much debate. Some contended that he evaded capture for so long because Milwaukee police placed a low priority on investigating the disappearances of homosexual and racial minority victims. This sheds light on institutional racism and queerphobia, as well as intentional negligence by the US police system.

Several books have been written about Dahmer’s life and crimes, as well as the debate surrounding his arrest. Anne E. Schwartz’s The Man Who Could Not Kill Enough: The Secret Murders of Milwaukee’s Jeffrey Dahmer (1992; reissued 2011), is a prominent work on the subject.
