The week-long series of events will help put a global spotlight on our great city while also generating a major impact for our local economy,” said Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney.

Philadelphia was rumoured as a finalist for Wrestlemania 31 in 2013. WWE went with Santa Clara, California for the event.

A report from Pro Wrestling Mania said, “The city of Philadelphia was reportedly very close to landing WWE’s WrestleMania 31 but the main reason they didn’t is because of the way they approached the bidding process. WWE felt like Bay Area officials were more inviting and wanted them to be there. Philadelphia officials approached the situation like they were doing WWE a favor by having WWE in their city.”

However, this time around, the city placed a bid.

WrestleMania was hosted by Philadelphia in 1999. About 20,276 fans packed the Wells Fargo Center.
