The announcements for the 74th
Tony awards to be held in 2020 were made on Thursday through a live stream on
the YouTube channel named after the award. The YouTube handle of The Tony
Awards aired a clip of Tony Award winner James Monroe Iglehart. The video was
followed up by the caption, ” Although we are not together in person, we can still honor the
Broadway shows and artists we know and love. Watch to find out who is nominated
for the American Theatre Wing’s 74th annual Tony Awards, presented by The
Broadway League and the American Theatre Wing.”

Iglehart who won the
Tony in 2014 for his performance as Genie in “Aladdin” hosted the
live stream and announced this year’s nominations.

Originally scheduled for
June 7, the awards were cancelled following the coronavirus pandemic. The awards
will now be announced virtually this year, as per an announcement made on the
website.

The musical Jagged Little
Pill clinched the most number of Tony Awards nomination this year. The rock
musical based on the book by Diablo Cody garnered 15 nominations, with Elizabeth
Stanley being nominated for “Best performance by a leading actress in a
musical.”

Besides being nominated
in the ‘Best Musical’ category, writer Diablo Cody was clinched the nomination
for the ‘best book of a musical.’

Moulin Rouge! The
Musical was the other big winner of the night with 14 nominations to its name,
author John Logan is in contention with Diablo Cody for the prize of the
“best book of a musical.’

While the ‘Slave Play’ by
Jeremy O Harris and ‘Tina: The Tina Turner Musical” by Katori Hall, Frank
Ketelaar, Kees Prins had 12 nominations apiece.

The Inheritance by
Matthew Lopez inspired from E M Forster’s novel Howard’s End sealed 11
nominations on the night.

The  play’s’ competing for the accolade of ”
Best Play” in 2020 are Bess Wohl’s Grand Horizon, The Inheritance by
Matthew Lopez, Simon Stephen’s and Nick Payne’s Sea Wall/A Life, Slave Play by
Jeremy O Harris and Adam Rapp’s The Sound Inside.

Ian Bradford, Jake Gyllenhaal,
Tom Hiddleston are some of the major figures
to have been nominated for the illustrious “Best Performance by Leading Actor
in a play.”
