James Caan, the American actor best known for playing the role of Sonny Corleone in the movie ‘The Godfather,’ has died aged 82. The actor received an Oscar nomination for his portrayal of a mafia family’s eldest son in the 1972 film. He also appeared in movies such as ‘Rollerball’, ‘Misery’ and ‘Thief.’

“It is with great sadness that we inform you of the passing of Jimmy on the evening of July 6. The family appreciates the outpouring of love and heartfelt condolences and asks that you continue to respect their privacy during this difficult time,”  a statement released on his Twitter account stated.

The actor was married and divorced four times during his life.   He tied the knot for the first time in 1961 to actor Dee Jay Mathis after dating her for nearly two years. The couple welcomes their daughter Tara Caan on November 5, 1964. They divorced two years later.

He married Sheila Ryan on January 12, 1976, and their son, Scott Caan was born on August 23, 1976. They divorced the following year.

The actor then wed model Ingrid Hajek in 1990. He was 49 years old while Ingrid was 29 years old at the time. The couple divorced in 1995, about four years after the birth of their son Alexander James Caan.

James tied the knot with actor and costume designer Linda Stokes in 1996. The couple has two sons, James Arthur Caan and Jacob Nicholas Caan. They filed for divorce n November 20, 2009, citing irreconcilable differences. They, however, reconciled before separating again in 2017. 

According to Celebrity Net, Cann was worth $20 million at the time of his death.
