Rapper JayDaYoungan, of Elimination-fame, has succumbed to gunshot injuries. He was only 24-years-old, having celebrated his birthday only recently on July 15. This is not the first time that a musician, especially a hip-hop artist, has been a victim of gun violence. Post the death of this Louisiana native, here we take a look at some other artists who met a similarly fatal fate:

DeShaun Dupree “Proof” Holton

DeShaun Dupree Holton, better known by his stage name Proof, was Eminem’s hype-man during the latter’s shows. Eminem has publicly acknowledged Proof’s contribution to his career on several occasions. In 2006, Proof was shot three times after an altercation over a game of billiard. The Detroit native later succumbed to his injuries.

Tupac Shakur

An American icon, Tupac Shakur was only 25 when he was fired at outside a Las Vegas casino in a drive-by shooting in 1996. Shakur was at a boxing match being held at the venue to support his friend Mike Tyson. The California Love star was also shot five times in New York City in 1994, but had managed to survive then.

Notorious B.I.G.

New York rapper Notorious B.I.G, who was involved with Shakur in a well-publicized feud, met a similar fate in the year 1997. The Juicy artist, who shot to fame with his debut album, Ready to Die, was in Los Angeles to promote his second album when he was subject to a drive-by hit. Biggie’s subsequent death sent shockwaves across the United States, and essentially brought an end to the East Coast-West Coast feud in American hip-hop.

Dimebag Darrell

The Pantera lead guitarist, Darrell was performing at a nightclub in Columbus, Ohio when a gunman, who was later identified as former Marine Nathan Gale, shot him dead. In the violence that ensued, Columbus police officers managed to kill Gale. It is believed that the shooter was upset over the breakup of Pantera, which led him to take this drastic step.

John Lennon

The Beatles‘ co-founder and probably the spokesperson of an entire generation of post-war children, John Lennon was 40-years-old when he was gunned down by an individual called Mark David Chapman, right outside the former’s apartment building in New York City. Chapman is currently waiting for his twelfth parole hearing, scheduled in August, having been denied parole on all previous occasions.

Sidhu Moose Wala

In May 2022, Indian singer-rapper Sidhu Moose Wala was gunned down by assailants when he was driving with associates in his car. Moose Wala’s father later claimed that his son had been getting death threats from gangsters who wanted to extort money from him.
