After four years of dating, Jeff Bezos has reportedly asked long-term girlfriend Lauren Sanchez to marry him.
The journalist, aged 53, and the 59-year-old founder of Amazon, who are currently attending the Cannes Film Festival in the South of France, got engaged, according to a Page Six report from Monday.
The shocking news that the Amazon CEO and his wife, MacKenzie, were divorcing after 25 years of marriage broke in January 2019. One of Amazon’s first workers was MacKenzie Scott, formerly MacKenzie Bezos. Together, the couple has four kids.
Hours later, it became public that Bezos was dating helicopter pilot and TV host Lauren Sanchez, whose husband and she had gotten to know the Bezoses as friends. Sanchez’s ex-husband, Patrick Whitesell, the co-CEO of the Hollywood talent agency WME, introduced Bezos and Sanchez. Sanchez and Whitesell had been separated since that fall at the time the news broke, according to Page Six. The couple had been married since 2005.
It’s unclear when Sanchez and Bezos’ romance started, but according to Brad Stone’s book “Amazon Unbound,” they reconnected at an Amazon Studios celebration for the movie “Manchester by the Sea” in 2016.
Sanchez received an invitation to Amazon’s annual MARS conference in Palm Springs in March 2018. They dined with Michael Sanchez, Sanchez’s brother, in Los Angeles a month later. Bezos hired Sanchez’s company in July of that year to produce video content for Blue Origin, his rocket business.
The National Enquirer claimed to have investigated Bezos and Sanchez for four months and to have obtained texts and pictures the couple exchanged.
Bezos and his then-wife reportedly knew that the Enquirer report was going to be released and timed their divorce announcement to get ahead of the news, according to Page Six, which published the news a few hours before the Enquirer.
The rumor website also stated that MacKenzie was aware of the relationship at the time Bezos and Sanchez began dating after Jeff and MacKenzie split up the previous fall.
