As the United States erupted with nationwide protests after George Floyd was killed under Minneapolis police custody in broad daylight, many celebrities have come up to lend their support to the protestors. Rapper Kanye West has made a donation of $2 million dollars to support the families of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery and Breonna Taylor.
He has established a 529 education plan to fully cover college tuition of George Floyd’s 6-year-old daughter, Gianna Floyd. The donation includes funding of legal fees for Arbery and Taylor’s families, along with black-owned businesses in crisis in his native Chicago and other cities.
Along with donating for the cause, Kanye has also joined the protestors in Chicago. He protested with the Chicago Public Schools students and demanded the schools to cancel their contract with the Chicago Police Department.
West’s representatives confirmed that he is being actively involved in providing financial assistance to a large number of black-owned businesses in his hometown Chicago and in several other cities which have been hit due to the unrest and widespread protests.
West joins hands with a large number of members from the entertainment industry who have taken a stand against systemic racism, police brutality and demand action from the political leadership in the country.
Ahmaud Arbery was fatally shot and killed by three white men while he was jogging in Georgia. They alleged he fit the description of a burglary suspect in the area. The men have since been arrested.
Breonna Taylor was an Emergency Medical worker who was shot at least eight times and killed by three Louisville officers who broke into her house without a warrant. The FBI has since then launched an investigation into her death.
