According to a recent study from India’s National Statistical Office (NSO), Bihar ranks third from the bottom among the states having a poor literacy rate.

Male and female literacy rates in rural Bihar are 57.1 and 29.6, respectively. 71.9% of urban residents are literate. With a literacy rate of 73.37%, Rohtas has the highest rate, followed by Patna (70.68%) and Bhojpur (70.47%). With a literacy rate of 51.08%, Sitamarhi has the lowest rate, followed by Purnea (51.18%) and Katihar (52.24%).
According to a recent Pratham poll, Bihari youngsters are more receptive to their instruction than children in other states. The current female literacy rate in Bihar is 53.3%. The literacy rate for women in Bihar at the time of independence was 4.22%.
The aforementioned issue, which is widespread in Bihar, has many causes. This includes the insufficient funding allocated for education, the absence of teacher training facilities, subpar infrastructure, the lack of clean restrooms, particularly for female teachers, government ignorance regarding the upkeep of high standards in education, and government negligence regarding the investigation of teacher issues. The sum of all these issues leads to the greater issue, which lowers Bihar’s state literacy rate to 63.82%, the lowest of all the states in the union.
