Answer: Durand Cup
The first Durand Football Tournament, or Durand Cup, was staged in Shimla in 1888. It is an annual domestic football competition in India. The Durand Football Tournament Society (DFTS) and All India Football Federation (AIFF) are the tournament’s hosts. It is the third-oldest club football competition in the world and the oldest one still in existence in Asia. With 32 cup titles over the years and 16 wins apiece, East Bengal Club and Mohun Bagan AC are now the most successful teams.
Since the start of the Federation Cup, which was followed by the Super Cup, it has only been an exhibition game with invitation-only players, but starting in 2022–2023 it will serve as the start of the Indian football season, with all of the Indian Super League and typically the top 5 I-League clubs taking part.
The competition bears the name of its originator, Sir Henry Mortimer Durand, who served as India’s foreign secretary from 1884 until 1894. It originally started as a football competition between various regiments and departments of the Indian Army and the princely realms. Numerous clubs from various regiments of the Indian Armed Forces have participated as invited guests to preserve the army’s presence ever since independence. In 2016, Army Green became the newest Army team to triumph.
Sir Henry Mortimer Durand founded the Durand Football Tournament, often known as the Durand Cup, in Shimla in 1888. In North India’s Shimla, Sir Durand was recovering from a medical condition. He made the decision to provide a reward to promote sporting competition in India after realizing the importance of sport as a way to preserve health. The tournament’s location was changed to New Delhi in 1940.
