Answer: 50
The United States of America has 50 states and Washington DC, the seat of the US government. Washington DC is a federal district under the authority of the Congress.
In Washington DC, local government is run by a mayor and a 13-member city council. It is represented in Congress by an elected, nonvoting Delegate to the House of Representatives. Residents of Washington DC have been able to vote in presidential elections since 1961.
The last two states to join the Union were Alaska (49th) and Hawaii (50th), both in 1959.
Puerto Rico is a commonwealth administered by the United States of America. The indigenous inhabitants of Puerto Rico are US citizens. While the people of Puerto Rico are unable to vote in the presidential elections, they do elect a nonvoting resident commissioner to the US House of Representatives.
Dependent areas under the US administration are: American Samoa, Baker Island, Guam, Howland Island, Jarvis Island, Johnston Atoll, Kingman Reef, Midway Islands, Navassa Island, Northern Mariana Islands, Palmyra Atoll, Puerto Rico, Virgin Islands and Wake Island.
