Mahatma Gandhi
Answer: Dadabhai Naoroji
Dadabhai Naoroji was an Indian political leader, merchant, and writer. He was born on September 4, 1825, in Navsari, in Bombay Presidency (now Gujarat). The scholar is famously known as the “Grand Old Man of India” and “Unofficial Ambassador of India” by the Indian population. During his political career, he served as the second, ninth, and then twenty-second President of the Indian National Congress. Also, he was renowned as the second person of Asian descent to be a British Member of Parliament after Anglo-Indian MP David Ochterlony Dyce Sombre.
In the year 2022, Naoroji’s former residence at 72 Anerley Park, London, was given a ‘Blue Plaque’ – an honour reserved for notable personalities who have lived and worked in London. He was the first Asian who was elected as a Member of Parliament, to serve in the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom.
The Blue Plaque scheme is run by the English Heritage charity, which honours the buildings having historic significance, across London. On the 75th-anniversary celebration of Indian Independence, the red-brick home of Naoroji was given a plaque which reads – ‘Dadabhai Naoroji 1825-1917 Indian Nationalist and MP lived here’.
The eminent Indian personalities whose residences were honoured by the Blue Plaque are Raja Ram Mohan Roy, Mahatma Gandhi, Sri Aurobindo, Jawaharlal Nehru, and BR Ambedkar.
