Southampton is a top tier English football team that plays in the English Premier League. It is based in Southampton, Hampshire. The team was one of the founding members of the English Premier League. Southampton has spent a majority of its time in the top flight since they were first promoted in 1966. Their longest streak without relegation, without being demoted to a lower league, was from from 1978 to 2005.
Since its inception in 1885, the club has been known fondly by locals as “The Saints”. This is because it started out as a church football team, founded at the St. Mary’s Church of England Young Men’s Association. The team sports red and white as its livery for home games, with turquoise and blue as its away colours.
The team has had a long-standing rivalry with the city and club of Portsmouth, partly because of their geographical history and partly owing to their shared maritime history. Whenever the two teams go up against each other, the match is called the South Coast derby. They are also known as the Hampshire derby.
Southampton and Portsmouth have played against each for a total of 71 times, including games in the Southern League. So far Southampton has won 35 and Portsmouth 21.
When the club was founded in 1885, it used the same crest as the city of Southampton. However, in the 1970s, the club ran a competition for its fans to design a new one. The new design, by Rolland Parris was used for the next 20 years, before being modified in the 1990s for copyright reasons.
