Argentina is a country in the southern half of South America. Argentina covers an area of 2,780,400 km2 making it the second-largest country in South America after Brazil. It is the fourth-largest country in America and the eighth-largest country in the world.

It is among South America’s most cosmopolitan and crowded cities and is often likened to Paris or Rome for its architectural styles and lively nightlife. Its industries have drawn colonists from Italy, Spain, and numerous other countries, millions of whom immigrated in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Greater Buenos Aires is home to about one-third of the Argentine people. Among the country’s other major cities are Mar del Plata, La Plata, and Bahía Blanca on the Atlantic coast and Rosario, San Miguel de Tucumán, Córdoba, and Neuquén in the interior.
The Gran Chaco is a hot and semi arid lowland area with one of the highest deforestation rates on the planet. Every month, an area over 133 square miles is lost. Two-thirds of the Gran Chaco, or 130 million acres, are in Argentina. Its massive forests are home to unique vegetation and wildlife, including 3,400 plant and 500 bird species and hundreds of mammals, reptiles, and amphibians.
