Answer: Dante Alighieri

The Divine Comedy was written by Dante Alighieri.

Dante Alighieri often referred to as Dante was an Italian poet, writer and philosopher.

His Divine Comedy, initially known as Comeda (modern Italian: Commedia), was subsequently renamed Divina by Giovanni Boccaccio and is regarded as the finest literary work ever written in the Italian language and one of the most significant works of the Middle Ages.

At a time when most poetry was written in Latin, which was only understandable to the most educated readers, Dante is credited for initiating the use of the vernacular in writing. One of the earliest academic defenses of the vernacular was his De vulgari eloquentia (On Eloquence in the Vernacular). His use of the Florentine dialect in works like The New Life (1295) and Divine Comedy contributed to the development of the current Italian language’s standardized form. His writing established a standard that significant Italian authors like Petrarch and Boccaccio would later follow.

Dante played a significant role in the development of Italian literature. His representations of Heaven, Purgatory, and Hell served as an inspiration for a broader body of Western literature and art. He is credited as having influenced numerous English authors, including Geoffrey Chaucer, John Milton, and Alfred Tennyson. He is also credited with using the terza rima, a three-line rhyming pattern, for the first time. He is regarded recognized as the “father” of the Italian language and is frequently called “il Sommo Poeta” in Italy (“the Supreme Poet”). Italian writers Petrarch, Boccaccio, and Dante are together referred to as the “three crowns” of the language.
