Kishore Kumar, born Abhas Kumar Ganguly was an Indian playback singer and actor. Besides Hindi, he sang in Bengali, Marathi, Kannada, Malayalam, Odia, Urdu, Assamese, Bhojpuri and Gujarati.
Kumar was born on August 29, 1929 in Khandwa in what is now Madhya Pradesh. He was most noted for being one of the most dynamic singers in the Indian film industry at the time. As a result of his talent and success, Kumar won 8 Filmfare Awards for Best Male Playback Singer. He also holds the record for most Filmfare Awards in that category. In 1985, as a result of his talent, he was given the Lata Mangeshkar Award by the Madhya Pradesh government.
The legendary musician’s attraction to music and Bollywood was thanks to his oldest brother Ashok, who became an actor in Hindi cinema. Kumar started his career in film as a chorus singer at Bombay Talkies, a movie studio. In the early days, despite being offered many assignments in cinema, Kumar stuck to singing. During the initial stages of his career, he imitated the singing style of K.L. Saigal before going on to develop his own distinct voice.
As his career grew, he also began to appear in films, with his first appearance being in the film Shikari. While he was not initially keen on being in cinema, the success of films like Ladki, Naukari, Miss Malaysia, Baap Re Baap and some others that he began to recognise his talent. As a result, he starred in numerous successful films between 1955 and 1966.
