The longest railway line in the world is the Trans-Siberian Railway which is a network of railways connecting West Russia with the Russian Far East. It is 9289 kilometres from Moscow, the capital of Russia to Vladivostok, which is situated along the Sea of Japan

Tsarevich Nicholas supervised the building of the Trans-Siberian railways between 1891 and 1916. It takes eight days to complete the journey. 

Trans-Siberian Railways played an important role in World War II for supplying the powers fighting in Europe. It also transported Soviet troops west from the far East to take part in the Soviet counter-offensive. 

The Trans-Siberian line remains the most important transport link within Russia. Around 30% of Russia’s exports travel on the line. While it attracts many foreigner tourists, it hets most of its use from domestic passengers. 

The Trans-Siberian Railway carries about 200,000 containers per year to Europe. Russian Railways intends to at least double the volume of container traffic on the Trans-Siberian and is developing a fleet of specialised cars and increasing capacity at the ports by a factor of 3 to 4. 

The highest point of the Trans-Siberian Railroad is Yablonovy pass at an altitude of 1070m situated in the Yablonoi Mountains, in Transbaikal, Siberia, Russia.
