Ambika is the mother of Dhritarashtra, and when Vyasadev came to unite with Ambika, Ambika was expecting Bhisma because she thought he was her brother-in-law. However, when she saw Vyasadev, she was mortified because Vyasadev was a sage who was returning from the forest after performing numerous austerities, and in addition, he was disheveled and not physically attractive. The revulsion she experienced caused her to close her eyes, and it is believed that this is how Dhritarashtra became blind because she did so at the time of union.
