KBC Offline Quiz: Which of the following is not a type of blood group?
AB
A
O
T
Answer: T
The genes that a person got from their parents determine what blood type they have. There are numerous systems for classifying blood types, but ABO is the most popular one. The ABO group is divided into four main categories: A, B, O, and AB. There are eight more blood types within these groupings. In the US, someone requires blood every two seconds. Doctors must administer the proper transfusion to a patient when they require one. The incorrect blood type can cause a negative reaction that could be fatal.
Blood’s primary constituents include:
1. The body’s oxygen-carrying red blood cells
2. White blood cells, an essential component of the immune system
3. Plasma, a yellowish liquid that has salts and proteins in it
4. Platelets, which help blood to clot.
The ABO blood group system divides blood types into groups based on the many antigens and antibodies found in plasma and red blood cells.
They identify which blood type or types will match for a secure red blood cell transfusion using the ABO system together with the RhD antigen status.
The ABO consists of four groups:
Group A: The antigen A is present on the surface of red blood cells, while the anti-B antibody is present in plasma. Blood cells that contain B antigen would be attacked by anti-B antibodies.
Group B: Anti-A antibodies are present in the plasma and red blood cells have B antigen on their surface. Blood cells that contain the A antigen would be attacked by anti-A antibodies.
Group AB: The plasma does not contain either anti-A or anti-B antibodies, but the red blood cells do contain both A and B antigens. Any ABO blood type can be given to people with type AB.
Group O: Red blood cells lack any A or B antigens on their surface, but the plasma includes both anti-A and anti-B antibodies. Any ABO blood type can receive this type of blood because these antigens are absent.
