The Hellblazer, John Constantine, is making a comeback. Warner Bros. is resurrecting another Keanu Reeves project after reviving The Matrix last year. A Hollywood Reporter report has confirmed that the studio is working on a sequel to 2005’s Constantine, a film based on the supernatural DC asset.

The project will reunite Reeves with original director Francis Lawrence. Veteran screenwriter Akiva Goldsman will work on the script this time. Goldsman will also produce through Weed Road Pictures, and J.J. Abrams will produce through Bad Robot with Hannah Minghella. The news was first reported by Deadline.

Abrams had been working on a Constantine series for HBO Max, but it will not be moving forward. It’s plausible that it’ll find new life elsewhere. The same can be said for Madame X, another Abrams-produced DC project that will no longer air on HBO Max.

There has been a shift in strategic approach under the newly merged company Warner Bros. Discovery, with an increasing focus on theatrical projects for DC characters. Cost-cutting has also occurred, with the costly Abrams-produced Demimonde also failing to move forward at HBO earlier this summer.

The announcement comes as Abrams and collaborators have been looking for a home for the animated Batman: Caped Crusader, a series created for HBO Max that will no longer be available on the service.

Constantine made $230 million worldwide, and the character has remained in the popular spotlight. Matt Ryan played John Constantine in an NBC series and later on The CW’s Legends of Tomorrow after Reeves’ incarnation of the anti-hero, who in DC lore is an occult detective.

Reeves’ star power has only grown in the years since the first Constantine film, with the actor managing multiple franchises, including John Wick – the fourth installment of which will be released in March 2023.

Lawrence, on the other hand, has a hectic schedule. He is currently shooting The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, a prequel to The Hunger Games, and is also connected to direct the Netflix adaptation of the video game Bioshock.
