Disney Branded Television is working on developing a series based on King Kong. The series is being produced by James Wan’s Atomic Monster Productions. This will be the first time that a live-action series is being made on the screen monster. The series will premiere on Disney+

The series is being penned by Stephany Folsom, who has also worked on major projects like Toy Story 4 and Thor: Ragnarok. In the series, viewers will get to see the origin story of Kong in the modern age. The story will lead us to Skull Island once again and will explore the many magical mysteries of the place. Plot elements will be taken from the original King Kong books by Merian C. Cooper’s and the new novelized versions by Joe DeVito.

Besides writing, Folsom is also set to be the executive producer of the series. Wan, Michael Clear, and Rob Hackett from Atomic Monster will also serve as executive producers. They will be joined by Dannie Festa and Marc Manus from World Builder Entertainment.

This is not the first time that a King Kong series has been planned. Earlier in 2015, MarVista Entertainment and IM Global Television were developing a series called King Kong Skull Island. However, the project was later shelved.

King Kong has been around for over 90 years. The first King Kong film was produced by RKO Pictures in 1933. A number of books as well as films have been made on the character. It recently reached new heights of popularity when it was incorporated into the Legendary/Warner Bros’ Monsterverse. Kong faced off against Godzilla in the 2021 film Godzilla vs. Kong. A new backstory was given to the character and Kong was made a part of the kaiju universe.

Kong’s impact on popular culture has been massive. The monster also featured in The Beatles’ film Yellow Submarine, where he was shown kidnapping a woman. The DC character Titano- The Super Ape, was also based on King Kong.
