The 37-year-old, while celebrating her nomination at the Grammys, wrote in an Instagram post, “A live album, recorded entirely on one mic getting a nod from the Academy is quite surreal….I’ve dreamt of this day since I was little, but I never really thought dreams like this could come true for someone like me – a tamizh ponnu from Goregaon! Before rising to fame, Darshini had her fair share of exposure and training with performing arts as her grandmother, who held several accolades in her field, was a professional vocalist specialising in classical music. Moreover, she was also a trained and experienced Bharatanatyam dancer.

Darshini has not limited her contribution to art but also works for a social cause, the mark of a personality who aims to pioneer change. Early in her career, she took on the task to help cancer patients in India who lacked the resources that were needed for their rehabilitation. ‘Jana Rakshita’, an NGO established by her in 2004 which works for similar causes, helped enable multiple underprivileged cancer warriors to reintegrate into society.

The support has been provided in the form of assistance in key areas like infrastructure, logistical, provision of water and electricity and ensuring optimum sanitation and hygiene.

The social activist-turned Hollywood singer is all set to showcase her art at the most prestigious awards related to western music and will be riding on the hopes of the upcoming Indian artists she has inspired.
