Malcolm D Lee’s animated sports film Space Jam: A New Legacy released
in theatres and HBO Max on Friday. A sequel based on Lee’s 1996 film Space Jam,
the film opened to mixed reviews from audiences and critics.

The film stars basketball superstar LeBron James in his animated self. In
the film, James is at odds with his youngest son (played by Cedric Joes) who
wants to be a video game developer.

James and his son visit the Warner Bros’ lot to see Warner 3000, a new
technology that can create a copy of James and insert him into movies and TV.
James’s son Dom is kidnapped by an evil AI called AI-G Rhythm, played by Don
Cheadle.

The film revolves around James’ quest to save his son. He teams up with the
Looney Toons — Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck and others — to win a basketball match
against AI-G’s digitized players.

This is the first film to feature the iconic Looney Toons characters since Looney
Toons: Back in Action
that hit the theatres nearly 17 years ago.

A sequel to the original Space Jam was originally planned in 1996.
But it was not until Warner Bros decided to take up the film in 2016, that the
production started.

The film has opened to mixed reviews with a section of critics saying that
it is a thorough family-entertainer while others criticizing the film for its
litany of product placements.
