A man paid $76,000 for a pair of Levi’s jeans from the 1880s at an auction in
New Mexico on October 1. Kyle Haupert, a 23-year-old vintage clothing dealer
from San Diego, California is buyer of the used jeans, according to a Wall
Street Journal report.

The bid
elevates the pair of old vintage jeans to the top of all time price lists. Mr.
Haupert, a trader in vintage clothing, contributed 90% of the winning offer,
while Zip Stevenson, a veteran of the vintage market who has been in charge of
the Los Angeles store Denim Doctors since 1994, contributed the final 10%, the
report further stated.

He told the
Wall Street Journal that he himself finds himself bewildered for having
purchased the piece of clothing at such a price. The one-pocket pants with
buckle backs from Levi’s are still in “wearable” shape.

The buyer’s
premium was added to the purchase price, bringing the total to $87,400.

The pricey
pair of jeans is as old as times prior to the invention of airplanes, traffic
signals, and radios.”The only kind made by white labor,” reads the
label of the product. Because such a campaign against the Chinese existed
between 1882 and 1890, the pair of jeans is conjectured to have been from that
time period.

According
to Michael Harris, a self-described denim archaeologist, the jeans was
discovered several years ago in an abandoned mineshaft in the American West.

Mr. Haupert
shared images of the auction and the priceless pair of jeans on the store’s
Instagram account.
