The year 2020 brought many new things along with
the coronavirus pandemic. Work from home, virtual meetings, virtual dates,
online learning became the new normal with all of us locked in our homes. This
also meant more screen time.
The world of entertainment also took a leap to
OTT platforms with big production houses releasing their movies on these
platforms. Many Hindi web series were released this year that earned praise and
were critically acclaimed for their direction, script and acting skills of the
cast. These series have been a saviour and with this year coming to an end,
Opoyi is here with a list of Hindi web series that gave us company in the
time of social distancing:

‘Patal Lok’

‘Patal Lok’, an Amazon Prime Video series, was a story of a
cop, played by Jaideep Ahlawat, who is assigned an attempt to murder case of a
journalist and as he digs deeper, he stumbles upon the involvement of
politicians, bureaucrats and businessmen in the workings of the system.
Produced by Clean Slate Filmz, Gul Panag, Neeraj Kabi, Swastika Mukherjee,
Ishwak Singh, and Abhishek Banerjee were part of the series.

‘Panchayat’

An Amazon Prime Video saw Jitendra Kumar as the
protagonist and also featured Neena Gupta and Raghubir Yadav. The story
revolves around Kumar, who secures a government job in a village and aims to
clear the UPSC exam, but until then, he is occupied by the local folks who live
a drastically different life.

‘Mirzapur’

The much-awaited season 2 of ‘Mirzapur’ released in late
October. The story is about the ‘crime family’ of Tripathi, a strongmen in the
small town of Uttar Pradesh badlands. The family is challenged by the emerging
Pandits and another rival family of equal clout, the Shuklas. The show has
become famous for caustic one-liners and brazen display of rustic attitude in
all its characters, especially from its main caste that includes Munna Tripathi
(Divyenndu), Akhandanand Tripathi (Pankaj Tripathi), Beena Tripathi (Rasika
Dugal), Guddu Pandit (Ali Fazal), and Bablu Pandit (Vikrant Massey).

‘Aarya’

‘Aarya’, a Ram Madhvani series that was released on Disney+
Hotstar, had Sushmita Sen in the lead role. Her character takes over the
‘family business’ in the time of a crisis. The show also featured actors
Chandrachur Singh, Sikander Kher, Ankur Bhatia and Manish Choudhary.

‘Four more shots please’

An Amazon Prime Video series directed by Anu
Menon and Nupur Asthana is a story of four unapologetically flawed women as
they live, love, make mistakes and discover what really makes them tick through
friendship and shots of tequila in Mumbai. The series stars Sayani Gupta, Bani
J, Kirti Kulhari, and Maanvi Gagroo. The first season was one of the top three
most-watched Amazon Original Series from India in 2019, and season two was
called “the most-watched Indian show on the platform” in May 2020.

‘Bandish Bandits’

‘Bandish Bandits’ premiered on Amazon Prime
Video and was produced by Still & Still Moving Pictures. Directed by Anand
Tiwari, it is a story of classical music student Radhe and pop sensation
Tamanna, who belong to very different worlds of music. They set out together on
a journey of self-discovery to see if opposites, though they might attract, can
also adapt and go the long haul. The show featured Ritwik Bhowmik, Shreya
Chaudhry, Naseeruddin Shah, Atul Kulkarni, Sheeba Chaddha and Rajesh
Tailang.

Scam 1992

Scam 1992 released on SonyLIV Originals. It is a story of Harshad
Mehta, a crime drama web-series directed by Hansal Mehta. The show is about 1992 Indian
stock market scam committed by stockbroker Harshad Mehta and is based on journalist Sucheta Dalal and Debashish Basu’s 1992 book The Scam: Who Won,
who Lost, who Got Away.

The show premiered on October 9 and stars Pratik Gandhi, Shreya Dhanwanthary, Hemant
Kher and Nikhil Dwivedi.
