In truth, despite its claim as a biographical drama based on the life of Marcel Marceau, a large portion of Resistance is made up. Specifically, the relationship between Marceau and Emma is fake, because she did not exist. The character as well as the romance were just created for the purposes of the film’s story.

Before Resistance was released in December 2018, Marceau’s family officially condemned it. They provided Variety with a statement in which they distanced themselves from the initiative and insisted that they had no part in its conception. The fact that it was widely advertised in media outlets as a genuine narrative despite having been heavily exaggerated was also attacked by Marceau’s relatives.
