At the age of 17, singer-songwriter Kiara Chettri is making waves in the international music scene with her latest track ‘Why’. “I think that just thinking that I am the No. 1 on the world indie chart and no. 2 on European indie charts is just so crazy because there are so many artists worldwide who are trying to get into that position. It’s honestly amazing and being the youngest solo artist to get that position is completely crazy, my parents are very proud and excited and so am I,” she told Opoyi.
Kiara, who released her debut album 4 AM in November 2020, says that she puts too much pressure on herself to be better every time and that has both good and bad effects.

“It’s not like the people are pressuring me because I have the most chilled out parents and everyone around is like it’s okay, but I put a lot of pressure on myself and I feel it’s a good thing and a bad thing. It’s a good thing because it makes you want to do better but also it’s a bad thing because then you get stressed and overthink. I always want to make sure that my next track should always be better than the previous one and I think all artists feel that way,” said the Gurgaon-based singer.
‘Why’, the haunting orchestral melody that was released globally on audio in June 2021, deals with the emotions of loneliness and melancholy, with beautiful vocals in an intriguing, cathartic arrangement.
The track’s success was followed by the release of a cinematic video in July and one could see how beautifully this young star has expressed different emotions of human nature with utmost sincerity.
Talking about what inspired a teenager to talk about such sad emotions, she said, “I usually don’t plan on my lyrics.”
“It just happens. I was writing lyrics down and it just randomly came. For me, everyone has gone through certain emotions whether you are losing some or someone is leaving you or just feeling alone or empty and it’s just a question about why I am feeling like this so that’s why I wrote this song,” she said.
Currently, a class 12 student, Kiara says that she is managing studies and music like a pro now.
“It does get tough as I am in 12th now so it's the most important year in life. I don’t like compromising on anything. Obviously, I am more inclined towards music but academics has to be right so I have learnt how to manage both together,” she said.

She is also traveling to the UK soon to study music as she feels that it is important to get academics right even for music.
“I have never really excelled in academics but I feel like it’s very important to balance academics and music and it is equally important to me and I am still learning how to balance it. The reason I am going to the UK is obviously because I want to learn music as I feel that you can never learn enough when it comes to music,” she said.
