Melissa Fumero, the American actor who played the character of Amy Santiago in the popular cop drama Brooklyn 99, will see her next Netflix show Blockbuster release on November 3. Blockbuster is a workplace comedy created by Vanessa Ramos. The series was written by David Caspe and Jackie Clark and stars Randall Park alongside Fumero in lead roles.

What is Blockbuster all about?

Blockbuster, the new Netflix comedy, is based on Blockbuster the brand. Back in the 1990s and early 2000s, Blockbuster was a popular movie and video game rental service. However, the 2008 recession bankrupted the company which was already struggling with poor leadership. The company filed for bankruptcy in 2010.

The workplace comedy is set in a Blockbuster store, the very last one, and it shows the struggle the employees go through to make a failing business succeed. Randall Park plays the manager, Timmy.

The Brooklyn 99 connection

In Brooklyn 99 season 3 episode 18 titled ‘Cheddar’, Jake Peralta enters the precinct to announce: “Today is the day I forever change.” He goes on to say: “This envelope contains what my uncle left me. He died a year ago, he was so rich, he had a whole room in his house just to eat in.”

Gina Linetti, the character played by American comic Chelsea Peretti, asks Jake, “You mean like a dining room?” “Yeah. But in Manhattan,” Jake replies.

He then goes on to say: “Just because I am definitely rich now doesn’t mean I will forget my roots. You all get something. So fire away.” The other characters tell him what they want. While for Charles Boyle, Jake’s best friend, Peralta’s friendship is enough for him.

Rosa asks for a bike, Amy, the character played by Fumero, wants ‘old expensive books’.

The precinct sergeant Terry Jeffords opens the envelope to find Jake has inherited stocks…a million shares. As everyone is excited, he learns they are Blockbuster stocks. The excitement wanes and Jake is left asking: Is that bad?

Blockbuster will be a trip down memory lane for those who went through the era of the video stores in the 1990s. In many ways, the show is expected to be similar to Superstore and Parks and Recreation.
