Mindy Kaling has, for the first time, responded to rumours that the father of her two children is her co-star from The Office and former boyfriend, B.J. Novak. Kaling’s first child, Katherine, was born in 2017, and her second child, Spencer, was born in 2020. Novak is their godfather.
The Never Have I Ever creator made these comments in an interview with Marie Claire. She said that such rumours have never bothered her and have also not affected the relationship she shares with Novak, “He’s the godparent to both my kids — and they have such a great relationship — and so far [the rumors haven’t] affected my happiness at all, it hasn’t affected my kids or B.J”.

Kaling, till date, has chosen not to reveal the name of Katherine and Spencer’s biological father even to her close associates. She reiterated her position in the interview, saying that until her children are old enough and do want to know the details, she will not speak about the same. Kaling says that she is the only parent her kids have, “I think I err on the side of super cautious so that there’s less things that they can potentially be mad at me about down the line”.
Despite neither Kaling nor Novak being a Christian, the actress-comedian decided to make him the godfather of her children because “this is a great tradition”. Kaling said that it was great to have Novak’s presence in their house during the pandemic. The two had first met on the sets of The Office in 2004.

Although she doesn’t watch The Office anymore, Kaling says that she is excited to show it to Katherine, “My hope is that she’ll be 12 or 13, and kids will be talking about it at school, and then she’ll want to watch it and I can show it to her”.
