Money Heist’s Martin Berrote aka Palermo is played by Lionel Rodrigo
De La Serna Chevalier. The 45-year-old Argentine actor is best known for
starring in the Motorcycle Diaries as Alberto Granado. Although he did not participate
in the first heist at the Royal Mint, he was the mastermind who planned the
heist at the Bank of Spain along with Berlin. The Professor had his doubts
about the heist as it was a very risky plan but he chose to go ahead with it in
order to save Rio.

Palermo is introduced in the story through flashbacks
including the Professor’s brother Berlin. He considered Palermo to be his
soulmate but never came into a romantic relationship with him even though he was
well aware of Palermo’s feelings towards him.

Palermo became an integral part of the team very quickly
and was assigned as the man in charge of the Bank of Spain. He was a
volatile force and made some poor decisions which led to Tokyo overthrowing him
as the leader of the heist.

Being an egotistical maniac with the need of having
to be in charge, he untied Gandia which caused chaos. He became a rival for the
gang for a short while but he was eventually reintegrated. During the heist was
shot by Gandia and got shards of glass in his eyes which led to Gandia naming
him ‘one-eyed queer’. His choices have ended up being seismic for the
series.

After going through a one-sided relationship with
Berlin, he shut the doors to his heart and turned into a cold and uncaring
personality. He got into a physical relationship with Helsinki, who fell in
love with him. As the show progresses, Helsinki is able to break through the
wall of ice that surrounds Palermo’s heart which grows their relationship. In
the latest season, Palermo moves heaven and earth to save Helsinki’s life.
