New Orleans rapper Mystikal was taken into custody on Sunday on first-degree rape, felony domestic abuse by strangulation and other counts.

Parish sheriff’s deputies arrested Mystikal in Baton Rouge after speaking to a sexual assault victim, who had minor injuries, at an area hospital just before midnight on Saturday. Investigation revealed that the assault suspect was the 51-year-old rapper, whose real name is Michael Tyler.

He was booked into the Ascension Parish Jail on Sunday and faces several charges including first-degree rape, simple robbery, domestic abuse battery – strangulation, false Imprisonment, and simple criminal damage to property. She remained in jail as of Monday and his bail amount has not yet been set.

Tyler, who hails from Prairieville, rose to fame in the 1990s. He is best known for his 2000 hit single ‘Shake Ya Ass.’

His 2000 album ‘Let’s Get Ready’ was a super hit and sold over one million copies on the strength of the hit song. He received two Grammy awards in 2003.

The same year, he was found guilty of sexually assaulting his hairstylist at his then Baton Rouge apartment. He spent six years in person and registered as a sex offender upon his release in 2010.

He was once again arrested in 2012 on a misdemeanor domestic abuse count in Ascension.

The rapper was arrested again in 2017. He surrendered himself to authorities after learning that there was a warrant out for his arrest in relation to an assault that allegedly took place in a Shreveport casino. The charges were eventually dropped and he was released from jail on a $3 million bond.
