What probably began as a joke ended with a multi-million windfall for Nigerian-American singer, David Adeleke, better known by his stage name Davido. On Wednesday, Davido sought the help of his social media followers to bail him out of a purported financial tight spot. Many initially thought it was a joke, until Davido posted his bank details on Twitter. “If u know I’ve given you a hit song .. send me money,” Davido wrote.

Davido said he had received 7 million naira ($16,000) in just 10 minutes and joked that he was now aiming 100 million naira because he wanted to clear his Rolls-Royce car from a port.

The figure just kept going up, according to screenshots Davido posted on Twitter of his bank account. Davido’s latest tweet said he had raised close to 80 million naira.

The singer thanked his fans and said he was overwhelmed by the response to his lighthearted plea. Davido has nearly 10 million followers on Twitter.

The donors included a member of the House of Representatives, Akin Alabi and businessman and socialite, Emeka Okonkwo, reports Nigerian daily newspaper The Punch.
