Robert Eggers, the acclaimed horror director, has been working on his remake of the 1922 classic horror film for quite some time now. Deadline has now reported that the 39-year-old filmmaker is roping in Bill Skarsgard and Lily-Rose Depp to play major roles in his adaptation.

In Eggers’ version of the epic, which was, in turn, an unofficial adaptation of Bram Stoker’s Dracula, Depp is set to portray the character of a young woman who is haunted by the Transylvanian vampire, Nosferatu. The titular character is likely to be played by Skarsgard.

The 32-year-old Skarsgard has many projects lined up for 2023. He will be seen in John Wick: Chapter 4 and the action-thriller film, Boy Kills World. Depp, on the other hand, will be seen in the series The Idol, where she will star opposite hip-hop artist The Weeknd.

The film has been Eggers’ passion project for quite some time now. He had earlier finalized on Anya Taylor-Joy and Harry Styles for playing the two leading roles, but the project was shelved in favour of The Northman, which is a Viking retelling of William Shakespeare’s Hamlet.

If the project comes to light, Nosferatu will be the fourth feature film of Eggers’ career. His promising debut, The Witch, which starred Taylor-Joy, was a folk horror tale. He followed it up in 2019 with The Lighthouse, a feature starring only two actors- Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson- in a story of how loneliness affects the human psyche.

The 1922 film, which was directed by F.W. Munrau, is now considered one of the most influential films in cinema history. It was shot in the German Expressionistic style, with light and shade playing a very important role in the narrative. It remains to be seen whether Eggers borrows elements from Munrau’s style or makes the film a far more personalized retelling.
