Chinese singer-rapper Jackson Wang is a pop sensation and enjoys a huge fan-following. Apart from being a part of the K-pop group GOT7, he also has a fashion label by the name of ‘Team Wang’. However, few know that before entering the world of pop and fashion, he was also a prominent Olympics-level fencer.

A winner of several competitions like Asian Junior and Cadet Fencing, Jackson Wang comes from a sports background. His mother was a world champion gymnast while his father was a fencer and an Asian Games gold medal winner. It also happens to be China’s first gold medal for fencing.

An Olympic-level fencer, Jackson was supposed to participate in the London Olympics 2021. But he dropped out after discovering his love for music and ended up pursuing it. He even had a sports scholarship from Standford University and was placed first in the Youth Olympics in his home in Hong Kong.

After being scouted by JYPE in 2008, he was approached by then again in 2011. The first time didn’t work out because he was not of age. After passing the auditions, he moved to South Korea and became a trainee at JYPE and the rest is history.

His love for fencing is such that reportedly he has tattoos of a fencing sword along with the Olympic rings.

He, now, will be participating in the Tokyo Olympics although in a different avatar. This time he was approached by the organisers to be a part of the Tokyo Olympics promo video.

Another fan said, “Just extremely proud of Jackson Wang,” while another wrote: “He threw away his chance to stand under the Olympics symbol in 2011 to chase his true passion in music. Ten years later, here he is, to fulfill his childhood dream with his new identity as an artist. Jackson Wang, you are simply in a class by yourself.”
