Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer and Greta Gerwig-directorial Barbie are set to clash at the box office when they release together on July 21, 2023. Social media is abuzz with memes anticipating the clash of these two behemoths.

While Nolan’s film is based on a real-life scientist who changed the course of human history by inventing the atomic bomb, Gerwig’s movie deals with a phenomenon that has been an integral part of children’s growing-up years and pop culture since the 20th century.

A Twitter user has even compared watching the two movies to the difference in character between Wednesday Addams and her roommate Enid Sinclair from Tim Burton’s new series:

Oppenheimer boasts of a star cast that includes the likes of Cillian Murphy, Emily Blunt, Robert Downey Jr., Florence Pugh, and Matt Damon. Barbie, on the other hand, is led by Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling.

Some fans have even voiced their frustrations on social media after not being able to see the teaser of Oppenheimer during their recent trips to the movie theatres to watch James Cameron’s latest film, Avatar: The Way of Water:

A number of fans have claimed on Twitter that the only reason they are going to the theatres to watch the sequel of Avatar is to watch the teasers of Oppenheimer and Barbie:

Nolan and Gerwig had clashed at the awards season in 2017, when their movies, Dunkirk and Lady Bird, respectively, were released (albeit not on the same day). Lady Bird was Gerwig’s first solo directorial venture and had immediately placed her on the map as a cinematic tour de force. She had earlier co-directed and also starred in the film Nights and Weekends with Joe Swanberg in 2008.
