Nightmare Alley

Four nominations. HBO Max and Hulu.

Guillermo del Toro’s reimagining of the 1947 neo-noir classic received nominated for best film and cinematography. The cast is stacked with A-listers, headlined by Bradley Cooper and Rooney Mara. It’s the storey of an attractive hustler’s meteoric climb from low-level carney to high-paying showman.

Being the Ricardos

Three nominations. Amazon Prime Video.

The behind-the-scenes look at Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz’s work and marriage got nods for Javier Bardem as Desi, Nicole Kidman as Lucy, and J.K. Simmons in a supporting part. Aaron Sorkin has written a compassionate and incisive depiction of a particularly tumultuous week in the production of the TV classic “I Love Lucy.”

CODA

Three nominations. Apple TV+.

With this drama, Apple scored its first best-picture nomination, while supporting actor nominee Troy Kotsur became only the second deaf actor ever nominated. (The first was his “CODA” co-star Marlee Matlin.) The storey revolves around the Rossi family of Gloucester, Massachusetts. Ruby, a high school senior, is her family’s only hearing member and, for many, their only link to the hearing world.

Encanto

The soundtrack became the first from a film to reach No. 1 on the Billboard list since 2019. “We Don’t Talk About Bruno,” the film’s most popular song, becoming the highest-charting single from a Disney animated picture in more than 26 years. Lin-Manuel Miranda created the musical magic. The plot revolves around a charming family in the alpine village of Encanto. Miranda was nominated for original song for “Dos Oruguitas,” not the song that caused such a stir.

Flee

This Sundance grand jury prize winner is entirely animated, with the exception of live-action archival footage. It’s the storey of Amin, a refugee teenager befriended by filmmaker Jonas Poher Rasmussen in his tranquil Danish hamlet when he was 15 years old. Amin never talked about his childhood in Afghanistan or his family. Amin took 20 years to open up to his pal. There are nominations for both best animated feature picture and best documentary.

Licorice Pizza

Three nominations. Digital rental.

The 1970s-period frolic set in director Paul Thomas Anderson’s sunny Southern California is now available on Amazon Prime Video, iTunes, Google Play, and Vudu for a fee. Anderson was nominated for best director, and the film was nominated for best picture. It’s a beautifully casual love letter to Anderson’s childhood home in the San Fernando Valley.

The Lost Daughter

Three nominations. Netflix.

Its nominations include nods for Olivia Colman, Jessie Buckley among others. The adaptation of an Elena Ferrante novel of the same name is a psychological drama starring Colman, Buckley as youthful and older versions of the melancholy and frustrated translator Leda Caruso on vacation in Greece. It also stars Dakota Johnson.

No Time to Die

Three nominations. Digital rental.

Daniel Craig is enjoying the good life in Jamaica after leaving active service in the 25th film in the James Bond universe, only to be sucked back in by old friend Felix Leiter from the CIA. Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV+, Google Play, YouTube, and other services offer it for a fee. Among the nominations is one for the title song, “No Time To Die,” written by Billie Eilish and Finneas O’Connell and including music and lyrics by Billie Eilish and Finneas O’Connell.

The tragedy of Macbeth

Three nominations. Apple TV+.

Denzel Washington stars as a gray-haired Macbeth who knows in his bones that the witches’ prophecy has given him his final chance to achieve what he wants: King of Scotland. Washington’s performance as Shakespeare in this black-and-white adaptation garnered him an Oscar nomination for lead actor. Frances McDormand also appears.

Cruella

Two nominations. Disney+.

Emma Stone plays the evil Cruella in this dog hater’s origin storey. The storey begins with Estella, who was portrayed as a 5-year-old by Billie Gadsdon. One for makeup and hairstyling, as well as two other stars, have been nominated.

The eyes of Tammy Faye

Two nominations. HBO Max.

Jessica Chastain received her third Oscar nomination for her portrayal of televangelist power couple Tammy Faye and Jim Bakker. The film was also nominated for makeup and hairstyling, particularly for the brash Tammy. Bakker is played by Andrew Garfield.

Following snubs from the British Academy and the Screen Actors Guild, Kristen Stewart’s unhinged Princess Diana earned her the nomination. In this biopic, director Pablo Larran employs a sad surreal perspective. Though reviews were varied, several commentators praised it as an emotive and artistic look at one of history’s most famous ladies.

Summer of soul (…Or, When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised)

Best documentary nominee. Hulu.

The 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival has finally been recognised, thanks to Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson. Stevie Wonder, Nina Simone, Sly & the Family Stone, Gladys Knight & the Pips, Mahalia Jackson, B.B. King, The 5th Dimension, and others performed in the New York festival, which was held in Mount Morris Park (now Marcus Garvey Park).

The Mitchells vs The Machines

Animated feature nominee. Netflix.

While on their way to drop off daughter Katie (voiced by Abbi Jacobson) for her first year of film school, the quirky Mitchell family must quash a revolt by the world’s technological devices. Thank God for two helpful robots. Mike Rianda, the director of ” Gravity Falls,” is nominated for best animated movie.

Luca

Best animated feature nominee. Disney+.

A youngster and his summer on the Italian Riviera are the subjects of the Disney and Pixar coming-of-age story. Jacob Tremblay provides the voice of Luca. He befriends Alberto, who is portrayed by Jack Dylan Grazer. There’s plenty of seashore fun to be had, but the two have a sinister secret in common. Enrico Casarosa directed the film.

Raya and the last dragon

Best animated feature nominee. Disney+.

Travel to Kumandra, where a wicked power 500 years ago wrecked the harmony between people and dragons. The dragons gave their lives to save humans. Now that darkness has returned, warrior Raya is on the hunt for a fabled last dragon to restore order.
