Just like the previous years, this year’s Oscar‘s In Memoriam section paid tribute to members of the global film industry who died last year. Indians are, however, miffed that the segment did not honour late singer Lata Mangeshkar and late actor Dilip Kumar, who died recently.

Dilip Kumar, who enthralled audiences with classics such as Mughal-e-Azam and Devdas, died only on July 7 last year at the age of 98 after a prolonged illness. Some of his other notable movies include Naya Daur, Ram Aur Shyam, Kranti, Karma, and Saudagar.

Lata Mangeshkar, on the other hand, died on February 6 this year at the age of 92, a month after she was diagnosed with COVID and pneumonia. Dubbed as “nightingale of India’, Mangeshkar recorded songs for over a thousand Hindi films in a career spanning over seven years.

Both of them had significantly contributed to Indian cinema and were the recipient of a number of prestigious honours bestowed by the Indian government, including a Padma Vibhushan and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award.

Several fans took to social media on Monday to express their anger.

“The amazing world-record-setting #LataMangeshkar (who passed away from Covid) sang more songs for more movies than shown in all Oscars combined. Yet, the #Oscars2022 #Inmemoriam did not see it fit to honor her even with a mention. Sometimes, I think, colonialism still lives on…” one person wrote.

“#LataMangeshkar of Indian Cinema #Bollwoodfame – Nightingale of India – not even mentioned among memorium of the movie folks who passed away in the last year #WTF1 #Oscars2022 #Oscar #Oscars #AcademyAward,” wrote another user.
