Paul Sorvino, best known for playing Paulie Cicero in ‘Goodfellas‘ and NYPD sergeant Phil Cerretta on ‘Law & Order,’ has died at the age of 83. He died of natural causes in Indiana on Monday morning.

“Our hearts are broken, there will never be another Paul Sorvino, he was the love of my life, and one of the greatest performers to ever grace the screen and stage,” his wife, Dee Dee Sorvino, said in a statement.

Paul Sorvino was born in Brooklyn in 1939. His mother taught piano while his father worked in a robe factory.

Sorvino was inclined to music from a young age and attended the American Musical and Dramatic Academy in New York where started developing interest in theatre.

He made his Broadway debut in “Bajour” in 1964. His debut movie, Carl Reiner’s “Where’s Poppa?”, released four years later.

In a career spanning over 50 years, Sorvino was seen in several films and television shows and was best known for playing gangsters. 

Following his death, several people paid tributes to him on social media. 

“The amazing Paul Sorvino has passed. From Baker’s Wife on Bway to Shakespeare in the Park to all the incredible film/tv roles – he was magnificent in all. Blessings to his friends and family,” one person tweeted.

Another person wrote, “R.I.P. Paul Sorvino, another king gone. An actor who brought so much to every role, including wonderful turns in William Friedkin’s Cruising and The Brink’s Job, among many others.”

“Every moment Paul Sorvino is on-screen in Goodfellas is perfect, but my personal favorite will always be the exasperated look he gives Henry when meeting with the hapless owner of the club they’re about to bust out. RIP,” another person wrote.
