June 25, 1983 is a date that has been etched in India’s history. The Indian side led by Kapil Dev won the cricket World Cup at Lord’s for the first time, and marked a night of celebration throughout the country. Almost 40  years since the incident took place, Bollywood superstar Ranveer Singh and his team will be recreating that feeling and the rush in the upcoming film ’83 directed by Kabir Khan.

The film’s trailer was released on Tuesday morning and the internet was buzzing within minutes of the release. The reaction was unsurprising considering the acting skills of the lead actors alongside the direction of Kabir Khan.

’83 is based on India’s run in the 1983 World Cup with a large part of the story revolving around the then Indian captain Kapil Dev, who was nicknamed “Haryana Hurricane” after brilliant displays for the Men in Blue.

India’s next fixture was against Australia, which the side won on June 20 and went on to play against the West Indies in the World Cup final on June 25.

Mistreatment of the Indian players is also shown in the film.  In spite of the difficulties, the Indians continue to work hard and share some light, fun moments  while the tournament is on.

Ranveer’s wife Deepika Padukone will be playing his on-screen wife in ’83. Padukone will play the role of Romi Bhatia, Kapil Dev’s wife, who manages to steal the show in the little time she appears on screen.

The star-studded film features Pankaj Tripathi, Ammy Virk, Saahil Khattar and Tahir Bhasin.
