Barbadian music icon Rihanna released
the music video for Lift Me Up on October 28. It is the first single from the soundtrack of the upcoming Marvel
Studios
film Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. The single, which marks Rihanna’s
comeback after six years, also pays a tribute to the late actor Chadwick
Boseman
who played the lead in the first movie.

The music video shows Rihanna in front
of a bonfire by the beach, singing the song about loved ones she has lost.
The video also includes clips from the movie Wakanda Forever.

The song Lift Me Up talks about love and
loss as a homage to Boseman who succumbed to cancer in 2020. The song is meant
to be from the perspective of someone who has recently lost a loved one in
their life. In the film, the lyrics of the song signify the Wakandans’ mourning of King T’Challa
(Chadwick), while the obvious real-life parallel is for the late actor himself.

The song is written by Nigerian singer-songwriter Tems. In a statement, he said, “After speaking with Ryan
(Coogler) and hearing his direction for the film and the song, I wanted to
write something that portrays a warm embrace from all the people that I’ve lost
in my life. I tried to imagine what it would feel like if I could sing to them now
and express how much I miss them.”
