On November 14, rumours of Jimmy Fallon‘s death spread on Twitter. The announcement stunned netizens, and the hashtag “RIPJimmyFallon” trended on the social media platform. However, the report is false. The late-night show host is still alive and well.

The slanderous hashtag, #RIPJimmyFallon, trended on Twitter Tuesday night, and The Tonight Show host had had enough, calling on Tesla CEO Elon Musk to personally remove the hashtag.

The tweet quickly went viral on the social media platform, with netizens shocked by the news. Many people believed the announcement was genuine because it appeared to come from the host’s official late-night show account. The news, however, is false.

The anchor’s birth year in the tweet was incorrect. Jimmy Fallon was born in 1974, not 1923. This would put him at the age of 48. If the year mentioned in the tweet is correct, Fallon will be 99 years old.

An unknown person evidently used Photoshop to edit the social media post and create a fake tweet.

Several internet users did not verify the tweet and immediately believed it. Twitter was flooded with tweets paying tribute to the television host. Many people were shocked and saddened by the spread of fake news on the internet. Some people also made memes about the topic at hand. Among the tweets were:

Twitter users who weren’t in on the joke, particularly those from other countries, were taken aback and perplexed.

“This came up as a hashtag, so I was taken aback. Really. Oh, it’s funny. Because Melon Musk fired all the people in the information confirmation department, now fake news can hit the market, so this hashtag. Oh, it’s funny real #RIPJimmyFallon,” one Korean user tweeted.

Fallon, upset, tweeted, “Elon, can you fix this? #RIPJimmyFallon.” Musk has yet to respond to Fallon’s request, despite taking a highly personal approach to content moderation since taking over Twitter.

The current state of Twitter has resulted in an increase in disinformation on the platform, which has been exacerbated by Musk’s firing of a significant number of people involved with content moderation and dealing with fake accounts and fake news.
