Rockstar Games has confirmed that it is actively working on the development of the successor to Grand Theft Auto V, but has yet to release details about when to expect the much anticipated GTA VI.

GTA VI was first announced by Rockstar in April 2020, when the video game developer said that a sequel to GTA V was in “early development.” Since then, however, only rumours have surfaced about the game, each different from the other.

The question on everyone’s mind, of course, is when to expect GTA VI.

While Rockstar has not shed any light on the release date of GTA VI, the American video game company recently suggested that good progress was being made in the development of the game.

In a post shared on Twitter, the American video game company detailed upcoming changes and improvements to GTA V and GTA Online. While the company did not directly comment on GTA VI or when to expect it, it gave fans a much needed update on the development of the next instalment in Rockstar’s long-running and much-loved series of video games.

“With the unprecedented longevity of GTA V, we know many of you have been asking us about a new entry in the Grand Theft Auto series. With every new project we embark on, our goal is always to significantly move beyond what we have previously delivered,” wrote Rockstar, highlighting their commitment to quality.

“…we are pleased to confirm that active development for the next entry in the Grand Theft Auto series is well underway. We look forward to sharing more as soon as we are ready, so please stay tuned to the Rockstar Newswire for official details,” the company added.

Typically, Rockstar’s release procedure involves an official Twitter announcement of a game, followed by a long wait, usually of 23-24 months, before a launch date is announced.

If the American video game company sticks to its standard launch procedure, then one can expect the launch date to be announced sometime within the next two years. This also aligns with a statement from investment banking firm Jefferies, which has said that Rockstar Games has one intellectual property (IP) “set to be released by FY24.”

In other words, if this new IP turns out to be GTA VI, we can probably expect a launch before March 31, 2024.

That being said, of late, several AAA titles have had very rocky launches, Cyberpunk 2077, being the biggest example, and Rockstar will be looking to avoid a similar pitfall. Indeed, Rockstar is known for their unerring attention to detail and polished game launches, and are unlikely to be in a rush to launch a game that does not meet their standards of quality.

Given this consideration, YouTuber Tom Henderson anticipates that the game is unlikely to be released before 2024 or 2025.

All that’s left to do now is watch and wait.
