RRR actor, Jr. NTR a contender for the Oscars? All you need to know
RRR was one of the biggest blockbusters this year
It starred Jr. NTR and Ram Charan as lead actors
It was directed by SS Rajamouli
One of the most popular South Indian movies in 2022 so far is RRR, directed by SS Rajamouli. The western public has responded extremely well to this historical action drama, in addition to the Indian audience.
Another indication of its popularity is the inclusion of the film on Variety Magazine's All Contenders Listed (Unranked-Alphabetical) list of potential Oscar nominees in the Best Picture category. In the Best Actor category, the magazine has also included actor Jr. NTR on the same list.
The film immediately took over the Indian market. Millions of Indians have fallen in love with the movie directed by SS Rajamouli, whose name is now synonymous with big-name actors, big-budget productions, and excellent storytelling.
The two South Indian superstars Jr. NTR and Ram Charan feature in RRR as pre-independence era revolutionaries against the oppressive British tyrants. Ajay Devgn, Alia Bhatt, Samuthirakani, Alison Doody, Ray Stevenson, Olivia Morris, and Shriya Saran also appeared in the movie in supporting roles.
But what sets this movie apart from other blockbusters is that it was able to draw in foreign audiences, particularly those from the United States, many of whom were discovering Indian cinema for the first time and their reactions have been noteworthy. It demonstrated the calibre of cinema that India as a nation is capable of producing.
Recently, Netflix set up a meeting between the Russo Brothers and SS Rajamouli. The director of Baahubali was cited during the interview as stating,"Yes, I was surprised with the reception from the West. A good story is a good story for everyone, but I didn't think I could make films for Western sensibilities."
"I never believed myself. So when it came out on Netflix and people started watching it, and word of mouth started spreading, when the critics started giving out good reviews, yes I was really, really surprised," Rajamouli added in the virtually held interaction.
