Amazon Prime India’s one of the biggest release, ‘Mirzapur‘, landed in a fresh controversy after Supreme Court on Friday issued notice to the makers of the show seeking reply over a plea filed by a Mirzapur advocate alleging immoral portrayal of Beena Tripathi, one of the lead female characters of the show.
According to media reports, the plea objects to displaying a Mirzapur woman Beena Tripathi, played by actor Rasika Duggal in a bad light for having sexual relationship with her father-in-law and a servant.
The advocate also claimed that the show promotes irresponsible representation of Mirzapur, which is a
culturally rich part of the country and is counted among 108 Shakti Peeth.
According
to the report, the plea filed in SC further read that the portrayal of a woman
in Mirzapur is ‘ridiculous’ and ‘shameless’.
“By showing such ridiculous and shameless things on the name of a city/ district is the insult of approximately 30 lakh population and rich culture of Mirzapur,” the plea read.
The
notice was sent to the makers and Amazon Prime Video by a bench headed by Chief
Justice SA Bobde, who also made the Centre, production banner Excel Entertainment
Pvt Ltd, a part of the legal proceedings.
However, Mirzapur is not the first web series by Prime video to face heat.
Saif Ali Khan starrer web series ‘Tandav’ also landed itself into a political controversy for allegedly hurting Hindu sentiments post which the Supreme Court refused to provide interim protection from arrest to Tandav’s director Ali Abbas Zafar and others who are seeking quashing of issued notices and FIRs against them by Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and others.
