Secret Invasion is the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) series on Disney+ and a new trailer was unveiled at the D23 Expo in Anaheim.

A beam of light, from a spacecraft, appears in a deserted field and a familiar silhouette is seen. Nick Fury, once the director of SHIELD, is back. He meets agent Maria Hill who says Fury’s been avoiding earth and Hill’s distress calls too. The veteran spy hears her out and says there hasn’t been a reason for him to return, until now.

Fury has come back to stem the Skrull invasion. The shapeshifting alien race was first seen in Captain Marvel, but as per the Secret Invasion comics, they infiltrate SHIELD and the US government.

However, Samuel L Jackson’s character vows to give them a fight, saying “This is my war — alone”, and adds, “I’m the last person standing between them and what they really want”. Fury’s seen warning James Rhodes or War Machine, that his security detail might be compromised. Talos, a Skrull played by Ben Mendelsohn, tells that one-time SHIELD director, “Fury, we’ve got to be very careful now”.

By the end of the trailer, Fury seems to have returned to SHIELD, sporting his iconic eye patch and leather overcoat.

Olivia Colman is also seen in the trailer of the upcoming series, warning Fury that he doesn’t have it in him to fight the Skrulls. Other notable cast members include Emilia Clarke, of Game of Thrones fame, and Martin Freeman who reprises his role as CIA agent Everett Ross.

The remaining clip conveys a sense of anticipation as Fury closes in on the double lives of this alien race.

This series is expected to arrive in the first part of 2023 and will be part of Phase Five of the MCU. It will have six episodes.
