Shazam! Fury of the Gods‘ is the follow-up to the 2019 DC movie ‘Shazam!’ and sees some of the old characters return, while new ones are added. Among them are Helen Mirren and Lucy Liu who have been touted to play the antagonists in the second Shazam film.

The trailer was released at the 2022 San Diego Comic-Con and offers a first look at the characters in action. Here’s a list of who’s who in the upcoming ‘Shazam! Fury of the Gods‘.

Shazam/Billy Batson

The eponymous superhero returns and must battle disgruntled gods in the second instalment, after getting powers from the wizard Shazam, in the first movie.

Shazam is the superhero alter-ego Billy Batson can conjure by uttering the magic words. Hence, the young kid will be in the movie as well.

Captain Marvel Jr/ Frederick “Freddy” Freeman

He’s a fan of superheroes and is Billy’s physically disabled foster brother. After he gets the powers of Shazam, Freeman turns into Captain Marvel Jr.

Mary Marvel/ Mary Batson

Mary Batson is Billy’s twin sister, who’s seen preparing for college applications in the first movie but then gains the powers of Shazam and becomes Mary Marvel. In the comics, she often joins Shazam and Captain Marvel Jr on adventures.

Wizard Shazam

The wizard Shazam gave Billy his powers in the first movie but returns in the second instalment too, as the superheroes battle gods who’re unhappy that kids have taken their powers.

Athena

The character appears in DC Comics as a Greek god and one of the five who created the Amazonians. Since the gods are displeased with their powers in the hands of children, Athena is likely to be instrumental in the plot’s progress.

Kalypso

The character isn’t based on anything from DC Comics but rather borrows from Greek mythology, where Kalypso or Calypso is one of Atlas’ daughters. She doesn’t play a major part in Greek lore except for supplying Odysseus with the materials to make a boat and leave her island after he stumbles upon it on his way to Ithaca.

However, the film’s trailer shows Kalypso as a warrior and wielding a weapon, so she must have an important part to play.

Hespera

Hespera is another of Atlas’ daughters and is one of the three nymphs responsible for light during sunsets, in Greek mythology.

Like Kalypso, this character doesn’t appear in DC Comics either, and the two will work together as a team in ‘Shazam! Fury of the Gods’.

All of Batson’s foster siblings will appear as well and with the power of Shazam they turn into superheroes too. ‘Shazam! Fury of the Gods’ is slated to release on December 21, 2022.
