Squid Game‘ fans will have to wait for a year, or even more for Season 2 of the South Korean show that took Netflix, and the world by storm. The creator said in a recent Vanity Fair interview that the globally popular drama would see the new season come out in late 2023 or early 2024. 

Hwang Dong-hyuk did not reveal much about the upcoming season, since scripts are only in nascent stages. However, the creator has promised there will be more games once the show returns. ‘Squid Games’ debuted in September and soon became the most-watched show on Netflix.

In the Vanity Fair interview, Hwang noted that he had only about three pages worth of ideas for the upcoming season, and thus, the fruits of labour are far from a full-blown script. Apart from more games, the creator noted that protagonist Gi-Hun, played by Lee Jung-jae, will be back for Season 2. He’s also reportedly said that the mysterious Front Man, whom we see in the first season, might have a more central role in the second instalment of the show. 

Upon release, ‘Squid Game’ became the most popular series on the premier streaming platform, within the first 28 days, garnering over 142 million views. Reportedly, it also led to a spike in Netflix’s subscriber count. The show continues to enjoy immense popularity.

In the first season, we saw a group of people down on their luck being brought together by a mysterious organization, who arranged a series of games for them. The winner gets a grand prize, but the games soon turn out to be deadly. As the story progresses, it becomes a macabre portrayal of upward social mobility and the evils of capitalism. 

Apart from the show’s commentary, the gripping narrative and unexpected twists have endeared it to global audiences.
